VALDOSTA – The Dedo Maranville Fine Arts Gallery at Valdosta State University will kick off its 2021-2022 season with a return to live and in-person experiences and the Faculty of Art and Design’s annual exhibition.
An opening reception will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, August 23. The 2021 Faculty of Art and Design exhibition will run until Friday, September 24.
“This very popular annual event is an opportunity for faculty members in our art and design department to show that they are not just ‘talking’ but also ‘walking the walk’, because all Studio instructors are also practicing artists, ”said Julie A. Bowland, professor, renowned landscape painter and director of the Fine Arts Gallery.
All full-time and part-time faculty members of the Art and Design Department have been invited to participate in the 2021 Faculty of Art and Design Exhibition. The exhibition will feature works by newcomers. Jenny Evans, Lindsay Godin, Taylor Shaw and Kaleena Stasiak, as well as returning favorites Julie Bowland, Tommy Crane, Evelyn Davis-Walker, Clyde Edwards, Mark Errol, Craig Hawkins, Abigail Heuss, Karin Murray, Selena Nawrocki, Ray Noll, Kyoung -Im Park, A. Blake Pearce, Richard Peterman and Michael Schmidt.
Throughout the opening reception, participants will have the opportunity to meet the participating artists; listen to a live performance by acclaimed pianist David Springfield, a faculty member in the Music Department at VSU; and view the multimedia exhibit showcasing “a wide variety of media, aesthetic perspectives and visual expressions representing the wide range of interests and talents of the faculty of VSU’s art and design department,” Bowland shared . To protect the health and well-being of teacher-artists and guests, no refreshments will be served due to the current COVID-19 health crisis.
VSU’s Dedo Maranville Fine Arts Gallery is located on the first floor of the Fine Arts Building at the intersection of Brookwood Drive and Oak Street. Free entry.
After the opening reception, the Art & Design Faculty 2021 exhibition is expected to be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday. However, due to the temporary staff shortage, guests are encouraged to contact Bowland at [email protected] prior to visiting to confirm that the gallery is open. The opening hours of the gallery will normalize at the start of the fall semester.
Bowland said all gallery visitors are encouraged to wear a mask covering their nose and mouth when viewing the exhibit. The gallery space is small and she wants everyone to have a safe viewing experience.
