Shoku-tei Sushi / NATURE TIMES ART DESIGN

Shoku-tei Sushi, a Michelin-level Japanese cuisine brand, chose Shenzhen as the location for its first restaurant in mainland China and entrusted local design firm NATURE TIMES ART DESIGN with the design of the space. The brand is committed to serving premium and delicate sushi to its customers and inherits the epitome of traditional Edomae sushi craftsmanship. For the project, the design team tried to combine traditional Japanese cuisine with oriental visual elements via modern design languages, with the intention of providing diners with fabulous poetic experiences.
The restaurant is located on the ground floor of a shopping complex in Futian CBD, Shenzhen. It is like a naturally growing “organism” hidden in a quiet corner. Natural elements such as stones, trees, earth, and plants define its entrance, which subtly balances with the surrounding modern skyscrapers and the bustling city center. Natural materials are also extended to the interior space of 200 square meters and applied to rectangular structures of various sizes and functions, to create a natural ambience and aesthetic. The spatial pattern, central walls, partitions, island counter and furniture feature simple square geometric shapes, giving the space a clear visual identity. Rectangular structures form various combinations, which enhance the layering and the experience in space.
NATURE TIMES ART DESIGN excels at shaping holistic spaces from the dimensions of time, space and nature. Based on the brand’s aesthetic values, the designers shed the eye-catching shapes and adornments commonly seen in Instagrammable spaces today, but endowed this dining space with a sober design and a low profile, hoping to make it more durable and durable in the ever-updating market.
The space presents a palette of colors and sober textures. Rammed earth, a traditional Chinese building material, was used to line the interior surfaces of the front area. It creates an interior courtyard landscape with the stone sculpture in the shape of a boat, while helping to optimize the ventilation of the space. The main dining room uses a variety of inexpensive natural materials such as terrazzo, wood, and paper, brings fabric as room dividers and window curtains, and creates large areas of pristine surfaces. Based on minimalist design languages, it boasts a user-friendly scale and light environment as well as a resilient microclimate.
Wei Jinjing, founder of NATURE TIMES ART DESIGN, was the lead designer of the project. He tried to express the wonderful taste of Edomae sushi through spatial languages, which are reflected in handmade materials, delicate lighting, orderly layout and warm hues, aimed at evoking the emotions of diners. The design not only created a space to enjoy delicate dishes, but also a calming and immersive atmosphere to temporarily escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The details of the space subtly convey traditional culture and craftsmanship. For example, the streetlights in the front area are highlighted by a variable-grain rice paper shade, the selected utensils crystallize the refined craftsmanship of Japanese craftsmen and the three-dimensional geometric lanterns in the dining room. use hand-made silk. membranes. All these traditional elements contrast and dialogue with the young city of Shenzhen and its modern manufacturing industry.
The restaurant’s mission is often to provide a relaxing, sensitive, immersive and intimate environment to allow people to temporarily get away from the daily routine. This attribute determines that its spatial design should not be simply limited to creating distinctive experiential consumption scenes for brands, but should also convey a positive aesthetic and humanistic attention to the audience and return to the essence of life, in particular in the post-pandemic era.
