GMC Sierra’s artistic design in early 2022 nears final product

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is looking to reclaim the Luxury Truck Championship title, but like all vehicle redesigns, it started with a sketch. GM Design’s official Instagram page posted an image of the early Sierra designs drawn by Vicente Muhlethaler, which shows a confident stance and exaggerated proportions. It’s design, after all. In the end, we would have loved to see its pronounced signature, mandible-like flash make it into the final product, but it may be in the works for the next GMC Sierra EV.

GMC Sierra 2022 Design Updates

Thanks to advances in lighting technology, the 2022 GMC Sierra has received more streamlined lighting with C-shaped daytime running lights that give way to a more prominent grille, producing that watermelon visual effect. With four inches of expansion at the grille, there’s no shortage of airflow to the engine – which is crucial for operating temperatures, especially when it comes to the extra heat from forced induction (which we see in the base Sierra’s 2.7L turbo, and its available 3.0L LM2 Duramax diesel engine).

But the most significant design update for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 isn’t on the outside, but on the inside. Like the 2022 Chevrolet SIlverado 1500, the Sierra’s new interior features a larger, horizontally-oriented grille, with a redesigned center console with an electronic gearshift knob; no column selector or rotary dials here. It’s for high end finishes, anyway. The base model – the 2022 GMC Sierra Pro – will have an interior that carries over from previous model years. As a work truck, this will avoid the inconstant scrutiny of the hordes of auto critics in the spoon.

The vehicle’s sleek interior design comes with all of the elements that push the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 into the top echelon of premium trucks with Denali and Denali Ultimate trim levels. Wireless charging on select models, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Google Maps, and traffic updates all work to ensure convenience is within easy reach of the driver. And of course there’s Super Cruise, which also works while towing. Keeping your eyes on the road at all times is important and is aided by a 15-inch head-up display.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will be in showrooms in the first quarter of 2022.
